Weekend Practice

Posted by Kevin Cook on Apr 25, 2009

Morning gents,

Just a reminder about nets next Sunday (26 April) in Victoria Park – directions on the website.

Also, please can everybody follow this link which has the dates of all of our fixtures for the first half of season and fill in your name and whether or not they can play on each of the relevant dates (just tick the box or leave it blank). That way we can start to put together an idea of how many players we will have for each of the matches/whether we will need to get ringers in etc. The first box is for the nets and the second is for lunch after the nets - I reckon that we’ll grab a roast at the Britannia or the Royal Inn from about 12.30pm. You’ll see that there’s also one match on Sat 16th May – this will be 11 a side game up in Hampstead and we’ll need to give the other team a decent amount of notice if we’re going to cancel so only tick the box if you’re going to keep the day free…

Cheers

Kevin

Team Selection

Posted by Kevin Cook on Apr 25, 2009

Apologies for the torrent of emails this week but, following questions from a few people, I just wanted to clarify the selection process which works as follows:
I will send an email every week, normally at least a couple of days before the game (apologies for the late notice this week as a result of the bank holiday). Everybody that wants to play needs to reply to this email by 5pm the day before the game - this applies whether you see me three times a week or haven’t seen me for months/years as my little brain is too small to remember everybody that has said that they will play over a pint or in passing etc.
Selection will then be based off the following criteria in descending order of importance:

  1. Fees - the amount that you elected to pay at the start of the season – it is only fair that those that paid more get to play more as without them we wouldn’t have any kit to play with – next season this will be less important as the initial outlay will be much smaller;
  2. Level of attendance – those people that turn up to play/support week in week out will be preferred over those that only make an appearance every now and then;
  3. ability – the least important as we are in this for a bit of fun as opposed to because we have serious aspirations of winning anything but it is unfair to the opposition if we put out a team consisting mostly of non-cricketers or with only one person that can actually get through bowling four overs.

Not everybody will get to play whenever they want but I’ll certainly try to make sure that everybody gets a fair chance – it would be great if people that are available come down whenever possible in any event as the support is welcome and there is always a good chance of last minute drop outs. Hope that helps and apologies for not making this clear earlier.

Cheers

New Season Just a Week Away

Posted by Kevin Cook on Apr 25, 2009

Gents,
Hope that you’re all well.
A few quick reminders. We are just a week away from the first game of the season – next Tuesday against Victoria Park Juniors. Please could everybody let me know if they are available for selection and then we’ll finalise the team after nets on Saturday.
Which leads me onto my second reminder – we are going to be having a bit of a net from 10.30am to about 12.30pm on Saturday for those that are free. Below is the location of the nets (the blue arrow). Basically, I think that they are on the edge of the little road that runs through the park called St Mark’s Gate – best bet is either to get the Tube to Bethnal Green and then walk (about 10-15 minutes) or drive/cycle/get a taxi and give me a call (07966 158 475) when you get there and I’ll direct you. I’ll be driving down from my flat at about 10.00am so I have room in the car for four more if it is easier for anyone to come to mine… let me know.
Final reminder is just for those of you that haven’t paid me to please do so when you get a chance this week. Bank details are in my email from earlier in the week - just give me a bell if you've missed it. All of the kit (except the caps) has now turned up so we are more or less all set…
Cheers

Goodmayes

I thought that we put in quite a decent performance last night against a very good team so we should be too bothered by the fact that we lost. Next week’s game is against Pacific on Monday – not sure how they got on last night although they won their first game and they were lower mid-table in Division 2 last year - I reckon that we might have a good chance of getting our first points…
Please could everybody that can play let me know by midday tomorrow so that I can confirm the team before people disappear for the weekend?
Thanks

Kevin

Final Preparations

Posted by Kevin Cook on Apr 25, 2009

Evening gents,
I hope that you’re all well. Having received replies from more or less everybody about their desired level of participation, I finally got around to ordering all of our kit today. Basically, everything is as per my previous email except that the sweaters, caps and logos were a few quid more expensive than I had budgeted for which means that all of you that opted for the £60 option are going to need to stump up an extra £5 I’m afraid (apologies). By the time that the pay as you play group have played a few games we should have a decent amount in the kitty for an end of season p!ss up.
The first attached spreadsheet sets out who needs to pay what based on the emails (let me know if I’ve got anything wrong) and shows how your hard earned cash has been spent. Please could you transfer the amount next to your name to my bank account as soon as you get a chance as I am currently about a grand out Of pocket.
Also, we are now only three weeks from our first game (fixtures attached again for ease of reference) so we figured that it was probably about time that we started thinking about having a net. It seems to make sense to go for the morning of Saturday April 26th a few days before the first game. Let me and Tim know if you’re keen. We’ll sort out who’s playing in the first game nearer the time.
Cheers
Kevin

Vice Captain's Tactics Watch

Cricket bats are available with a wide range of features, and choosing one is a very personal decision. There are no right or wrong bats, just the one that feels right for you. Of these features, size and ‘pick-up’ or ‘feel’ are particularly important. The top of the bat handle should reach the top of a player’s thigh, allowing him to take guard with his weight evenly balanced on both feet, and with his eyes level facing the bowler. The weight of cricket bats varies from around 1lb 11oz for the smallest junior bat to 3lb 4oz for the heaviest full size bat, though anything over 3lb takes considerable strength to wield. However, the ease of ‘pick-up’ of a bat while batting is more important than its absolute weight, and depends on both the bat size and how the weight is distributed around the blade. Different batsmen prefer different ‘pick-up’, so its important to get the feel of several bats before making a choice. Pick-up affects bat control, which must be exercised only by the batsman’s ‘top hand’ on the bat handle – this is the left hand for a right handed batsman. If he can’t play strokes with his top hand alone then the bat is too heavy; his technique will suffer and frustration will follow. It is particularly important for junior batsmen to avoid this, so that they learn the right technique and enjoy batting. Other features affecting a bat’s performance and balance are slight curvature of the bat face to bring the point of impact with the ball below the batsman’s eyes, and bat handle technology and varying handle thickness that gives each model a different feel and flexibility.
